If there’s one thing Aussies know how to do properly, it’s summer. When it comes to kicking back, unwinding and soaking up the sun, we know it best. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get inspired to up your summer game. From keeping the kids entertained to hosting friends and family on long balmy evenings, here are a few easy and inexpensive ways to dial up the fun this summer.
1. Give your outdoor space a makeover
Being exposed to the elements all the time can leave your outdoor entertaining area looking a little tired. With summer in full swing, now might be time to give things a freshen up. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune - try some new all-weather cushion covers, a couple of candle lanterns and a new umbrella. You’ll be surprised the difference it can make. You’ll find all these and many more outdoor items at Kmart, Target and Myer.
2. Create a summer spread
There’s nothing quite as relaxing as a sunset drink on a warm summer evening. But don’t forget the nibbles! A summer grazing board is a crowd pleaser that’s quick and easy to put together. Start with a wooden chopping board from [local retailer] and then let your imagination run free with your favourite food from Aldi, Coles or Woolworths.
3. Make your own icy poles
Nothing says summer like an icy pole – and they’re so easy to make at home. Start with a set of icy pole moulds from Target. Then, combine chopped fresh fruit with either juice or yoghurt from Aldi, Coles or Woolworths, pop them in the freezer and before you know it, you’ve got yourself heaven on a stick. But these aren’t just for the kids. With so many different ingredient options, you can make a bunch of flavours that adults can enjoy too.
4. Backyard camping
We all know that hot weather and bored children are not a great combination. But there is a simple fix that doesn’t mean driving for hours and paying for expensive campsite passes.
Use those warm summer days to create your own camping fun in your backyard – all it needs is a bit of pre-planning. Grab a tent or teepee, a large picnic rug, plenty of cushions and throws from Myer and some lawn games from Kmart. All you need now are some snacks and treats from Aldi, Coles or Woolworths to keep your little campers happy.
